Recent Auction Highlights
| 9 December, 2008 - Robert A. Siegel Auction Galleries In early December Robert A. Siegel held a sale of U.S and Confederate States Postal History in New York City. The sale included 84 lots of fine quality Canadian stamps. If it weren’t for the present economic conditions, there probably would have been a number of good prices. But those days seem behind us. If anything, it now seems to be a buyer’s market as the following realizations will show. We have converted the prices realized at the rate of $1.00 U.S. = $1.25 CDN.
Comments Since September, we have seen a number of significant auctions of Canadian stamps in Canada and the U.S. Looking at the prices realized clearly shows a downwards trend in prices. In this sale, most of the lots highlighted above represent stamps of very fine quality. These were sold at prices that are only average at best, even where they exceeded catalogue. We wish we could ignore these trends, but that would be closing our eyes to the reality of the situation. The winners in this kind of situation are those who take advantage of it, screw up their courage, and purchase the finest examples at prices which, years from now, will make them very happy. We’ve seen it before and we will see it again. |
